Independent, Authentic, and Delicious: How We Curate Our London Food Stops
When it comes to eating in London, you can easily follow the crowd. The same viral restaurants, the same glossy chains. But at London Bites Food Tours, we prefer the unbeaten path, the one that winds through Borough Market’s hidden corners and the East End’s atmospheric backstreets, where the food is as rich in story as it is in flavour.
We believe the city’s best bites come from independent makers and passionate locals. People who pour their heart into every dish, loaf, or cup. That’s why each stop on our tours is hand-picked, tasted (repeatedly, it’s a tough job), and chosen with care.
The Art of the Perfect Stop
Our team spends months curating each route, wandering through market stalls, chatting with chefs, and sampling dishes that capture London’s spirit. We’re not looking for hype, we’re looking for honesty, heritage, and a sprinkle of culinary magic.
Each partner has to meet three golden rules:
- Independent: Family-run or owner-led, and rooted in the community.
- Authentic: Food that tells a story, often passed down through generations.
- Delicious: Simply put, if we wouldn’t bring our own friends here, it doesn’t make the cut.
And once they’re on board, they’re part of the London Bites family, a collective of passionate people shaping the city’s food scene, one bite at a time.
Spotlight on Borough Market: A Feast for the Senses
Borough Market isn’t just London’s most famous food destination, it’s a living, breathing celebration of flavour and craftsmanship. And while many visitors stop at the first big-name stall, we guide you deeper, to the artisans and independents who define what the market truly stands for.
Portena
This is the place for Empanadas, not just in London but the whole of the UK. Prepared fresh daily and with a myriad of flavours it’s a firm favourite on the tours. The empanada itself can trace it’s routes back to the cornish pasty. Showcasing the influence of UK food on the world scale.
Juma Kitchen
One of the beauties of London food tours is the complete global choice we have in the city. This Iraqi food stall is a prime example of how lucky we are. British-Iraqi chef Philip Juma left his job in finance and took the gamble that British people would give his family based Iraqi recipes a go. In 2021 he got to the finals of BBC street food awards and his unit at Borough is one of the most popular in the whole market. Without people like him you wonder where the UK’s food scene would be.
La Pepia
We visit these guys on our Gluten Free tour of Borough. The arepa is one of the fastest growing food trends in the UK at the moment. The gluten free corn flour and healthier toppings has made it a go to for the more health conscious street food lover.
Spotlight on the East End: Where Cultures Collide (Deliciously)
Step into the East End, and you’ll taste the world in a few city blocks. From Jewish bakeries and Bangladeshi curry houses to modern East London eateries, this neighbourhood is a celebration of migration, fusion, and resilience — and it’s where London Bites was born.
Beigel Bake
An East End icon, Beigel Bake on Brick Lane has been serving its legendary salt beef bagels since the 1970s. Queue any time of day or night, and you’ll find locals, cabbies, and tourists alike clutching a warm beigel stuffed with tender meat and fiery mustard. It’s a London rite of passage, and one of our most beloved stops.
Dumpling Shack
At Spitalfields Market, this cult-favourite stall dishes up silky, Shanghai-style dumplings made by hand each morning. The owners, John and Yee, started small, working out of a tiny kitchen and building a loyal following that now stretches across the city. One bite and you’ll understand why.
The Market Coffee House and Bar
This family run business is based in one of the oldest buildings in the area. Restaurants originally grew from coffee houses and bars and this is a nod to that old school character. The owners Peter and Kay believe in sourcing the best local ingredients and supporting some fantastic local vendors. You only need to look at their extensive beer and wine selection to understand the love and dedication that’s been put into this business. We love taking our guests here to end the tour with a good beer.
Why It Matters
Our tours are more than food, they’re about connection. By choosing independent vendors, you’re helping sustain the small businesses that give London its character. These are people who source ethically, hire locally, and care deeply about what they create. If we don’t use them we loose them. Can you imagine a high street full of Costa coffee and Pizza Express??
When you join a London Bites Food Tour, you’re not just eating, you’re becoming part of a community that believes in food with purpose.
